Product Description

The Walden Magic Model remains one of the world’s most popular longboards due to its versatility and unique design features. Our super durable X2 construction makes this model the perfect travel companion for surfers needing a board that will perform to high standards and also withstand some tough treatment.

DESIGN: Walden’s patented hull design has become synonymous with performance longboarding, however the design is easily transferred through different board shapes and sizes, and rider skill levels from novice to experienced.

CONTOURS: Single concave from the nose through to the midpoint. Double concave extends towards the fins with moderate vee out through the tail.

ROCKER: The smooth, full-length rocker compliments the bottom contours and has extra flip out the back making it turn super tight off the tail for more experience surfers.

RAILS: The hard edge running around the perimeter of the board provides bite on the face, while the beveled rail maintains the boards forgiveness and maneuverability.

From the novice rider through to the savvy competitor looking for extended nose time, this is a longboard that does everything well in waves ranging from 1 to 10 feet.

Technology

X2 Epoxy

X-2 Epoxy is a multi-layered sandwich construction using epoxy resin, woven fiberglass and sheets of thin wood veneer wrapped around a Nanoweld EPS core. This construction method produces a light, extremely durable surfboard that's particularly strong on the deck.

The durability and strength of X-2 Epoxy boards make them ideal for SUP's, surfers who like to travel, and heavy beach break conditions where other boards are prone to breaking. X-2 Epoxy boards feel solid under your feet and can take an absolute beating while maintaining their appearance for many years.

  1. 5 out of 5 It really might be magic!

I was on holiday in Waikiki last year and paid a few bucks to rent a beaten up old long board. I walked over to the line up of dinged and patched up boards and one had the brand “Magic Model”, and I thought to myself, “that’s a pretty bold claim, let’s see if it is true!”. The board literally had gaffer tape covering up some pretty serious dings, I was hoping it would hold together!

I paddled out to the Queens on this dinged up board, with some trepidation, because there were some really skilled local long boarders surfing out there. In fact, there was even a couple on a long board doing some kind of gymnastic routine (you don’t see that kind of flashy surfing stuff at home in New Zealand – welcome to Hawaii!). So I was a bit worried that I’d struggle to compete and catch waves on this world famous break against highly skilled locals used to “running over” naive tourists like me.

But the Magic Model (mine was a 10ft model) was so easy to paddle it was just ridiculous. I caught so many waves, and I was really impressed how easy such a big board was to turn and carve. It was just such a great and relaxing cruising long board.

I got back home to New Zealand and decided I really wanted to get one. Figuring it would be perfect, especially for our East Coast beaches where we have lots of days that you just can’t really surf on a short board easily, mushy and crumbly. So I sold an old board to help fund a brand new Walden Magic Model 10′ X2 Longboard.

It has been a fabulous decision. I’ve repeatedly surfed on days where the short boarders are struggling to catch their waves, and I’ve powered out beyond them by 10m-20m and can catch almost any wave I want to catch, this is from a person who is pretty good when I’m on the wave, but catching the wave is usually my biggest challenge. I can paddle on my knees if I need to and under certain conditions this is a great way to catch waves super early in onshore conditions.

One session at Mount Maunganui, it actually got a bit embarrassing because I caught so many waves and I was catching so far beyond the short boarders that I had to check myself lest I became a “wave hog”, it’s the first time I’ve had to worry about that happening, usually I’m struggling in the melee against all the other short boarders and feeding off the better short boarders scraps.

So I love my new board. It wasn’t the cheapest but it seems really durable so far, has incredible wave catching ability and turns and carves really nicely (as well as a big 10 footer can anyway).

I’ve caught so many waves in the traditional longboard wave range e.g. 2-3 foot over the summer. On the weekend I was at North Piha, catching 5ft West Coast Waves which have quite a bit of weight in them, and I caught some great long 70m+ carving rides on beach break conditions.

Because the board is so easy to paddle I could get out back about twice as fast as I could on a short board. So once again more waves for me. On a short board I might catch say 4-6 waves in an hour and a half. But on my Magic Model I would likely catch a wave every 5 mins so catching 20 waves in a session is quite achievable. Basically I am almost guaranteed a wave on each set.

My summary is that the Walden Magic Model is truly magic for catching waves and is a really enjoyable easy turning long board ride. Although more expensive, you will get great value from one because your “cost per wave” will be minuscule after a few years of ownership. I’m seriously considering getting an 8ft version or a Walden Mega 7’2 and add one of those to my quiver.

I am 85kg (about 180 pounds) and 185cm (6’1) and would be an intermediate Paddle Surfer and an early intermediate surfer.

  2. 5 out of 5 No better board

I’ve been riding a 9-0 magic for 10 years. From 2′ east coast mush, to 10′ Fiji, this board handles it all. The Magic Model is always exhilarating and the only board I ride!

  4. 5 out of 5 A Truely Great Longboard...

I have been riding longboards (malibus) since 1959 and I have owned many custom boards and many ‘off the rack’ designs. I first rode the X2 at Waikiki recently and my first comment is…” I want one!!” This board is super responsive, sits and rides with predictability, easy in the white water and glides effortlessly on the wave face. It responded to my every move with stability, smoothness and great handling all round. Can’t wait to get out on my own X2 asap.
