Product Description

The Gnaraloo Softshell Flounder Pounder combines shortboard performance into one of the most user-friendly softboard designs on the market.

SKIN: Thick Polyethylene deck and a soft slick skin on the bottom is super durable, yet soft enough to keep beginners safe.

CORE: Expanded polystyrene core with TRIPLE internal stringer system produces a rigid flex pattern that can be pushed hard through turns. Other softboards can over flex, but the integrity of the rocker is maintained in the Flounder Pounder bringing the feel closer to a traditional fiberglass surfboard.

CONSTRUCTION: Safe for all skill levels, the vacuum construction process eliminates hard or sharp surfaces, and prevents peeling or bubbling.

FEATURES: Leash plug with HD internal reinforcements plus FCS compatible fin boxes and flexible thruster fin set makes it fast and easy to hit the water, and upgrade the performance of the board with stiffer fins.

NOTE: Fins supplied with the board / Rider weight is based on board volume and intermediate rider skill level

Construction Softshell Construction

Boards with Soft Shell construction feature much more technology then the eye can see. They are a combination of materials designed to allow the board to perform to the highest levels given the constraints of the flexibility of the materials. All boards feature an integrated Fin System, 2 or 3 Wooden Stringers depending on the size of the board to ensure the board is stiff enough. A light weight EPS core combined with a PE foam layer on the deck and a High Density PE Slick that is mounted to a thin PE Foam layer on the bottom give the board an awesome feel in the water. Soft enough not to hurt should you fall on it but hard enough to handle the power of the waves.

Bought the 6’6″ model. I am 95kgs and found it easy to paddle and catch waves early. Is still short enough to throw around it is a fight between me and the kids as who is going to surf it now. Good all round board, will get plenty of use in summer!

Standing tall at 5’6″, I road-tested the Gnaraloo Flounder Pounder for a full seven days in varying beach break conditions. The Flounder Pounder is touted as a softboard performance fish and one of the most user friendly on the market. It was also voted in at No. 2 in the Coastalwatch 2015 Top 5 Foamies Review. The 5’6″ model (45 litres) is one of three in the range, with a 6’0″ (52 litres) and a 6’6″ (59 litres) rounding out the quiver. The board has a triple internal stringer that produces a rigid flex pattern and can be pushed hard through turns, says Global Surf Industries. In terms of functionality and ride-ability, the board dealt a swift blow to my preconceived idea that softboards are not typically ridden with small wave performance in mind. The generous amount of volume made easy work of paddling the line-up searching for peaks. And it’s capable of serious turns; with the surprising amount of straight-line speed great for open face carves, and the occasional turn in the pocket. The board is FCS 1 compatible, so I used PG-5’s initially then swapped across to PC-5’s. I found the PC-5’s gave the board a bit more spring and looseness through turns. If looking to ride at the semi performance level, and jumping straight across from fiberglass, the soft deck takes a little getting used to. But two surfs in, I had it down-pat no problems. While not having tested the 6’0″ and 6’6″ models, the functional and versatile characteristics of the 5’6″, which make it such a pleasure to ride, would no doubt extend to these longer sleds. The full Flounder Pounder range allows the complete progression from stability and length, through to shorter and more performance oriented surfing. I’d like to see perhaps a 5’8″ added to the range, in similar spec proportions, which would round-out the Flounder Pounder quiver nicely. Hands-down, the Flounder Pounder exceeds expectations – it does what its supposed to do, plus a little more. The board is a must-have for anyone looking to spice up their summer time quiver; and the volume and stability would also make it ideal for micro-grommets stepping up from something longer.

Its really nice and its good for anyone honestly. If you want to learn how to surf this is the board to use.

Bought a 5’6 and a 6″ for my 11 year old son and his 12 year old cousin at a local surf shop. Both fairly new to surfing but they handled these boards like a couple pros. Great buoyancy and stability with plenty of maneuverability. They did fine with the soft fins but we may switch them out as some suggest here. My sons first board was a Softech, which is a fine board, but he found the Flounder Pounder to be much more maneuverable and overall easier to ride.

We have had so much fun riding our boards- from my 5 year old through to my husband and I! What a great investment- thank you

Tons of float! Not your average soft top. I am 42 y/o male and weigh approx. 206lbs. Super easy to catch waves and ride. Replacing the fins with hard fins is a must. So much fun. I am discovering parts of the wave I never found on my longboard. Have only ridden it in 2-3ft beach break on East coast. Can’t wait to see how it performs in bigger (4-6ft) surf.

The Flounder Pounder is a dynamic surfboard and a lot of fun, whether it is carving on a waist high wave or a wave that is substantially larger. It would be easy to underestimate the potential of this board at first glance. Soft surfboards boards have never been considered high performance; however, the Flounder Pounder breaks that rigid stereotype. The Flounder Pounder is nimble and responsive, will drive down the line effortlessly and the FCS compatible fin boxes extend the top end range for this board. The buoyancy of the Flounder Pounder coupled with a crisp bottom rail edge makes for a clean release on the wave, and allows you to utilize different lines on the wave, compared to traditional resin/fiberglass surfboard construction. I am 43, and have been surfing for thirty years. Sessions on my 6’6” Flounder Pounder always leave me with a smile on my face, without fail. Open your mind and check out the Flounder Pounder soft surfboards, you will not regret it.

Just bought 6’6″ flounder pounder today and I must say it was WELL worth it. Haven’t surfed in 3 years, and I caught nearly every wave I dropped in on. Great purchase and one fun board.

OK I am the CEO of GSI but I have to say I love this board. I am riding the 6’6″ Flounder Pounder for fun at the local
beach break. I am 51 years old, I have an artificial hip ( so I don’t get up too quick normally ) but this board is
amazing. I know it is design for kids but really, kids get a lot of stuff these days why can’t we have some fun as well.
The Flounder Pounder is super generous, it gives me time to get up and once on the wave I feel like Mick Fanning.
It is amazing. Speed, turning ability is massive, you can drop some serious turns on this board. I swapped out the
soft edge fins for some FCS Foam Core fins and it is like I put a super charger in the board. Give this board a go if
you want to have some real fun in small to medium waves if is a real hoot. I feel like I am 15 again not 51. Life is
truly better when you surf after a session on the Flounder Pounder.
